2023-2024 AWARDS
The New York Drama Critics’ Circle met at the New York offices of Time Out Media on Monday, May 13, 2024 to determine the winners of its 88th annual awards. The results were as follows:
Best Play: Stereophonic (David Adjmi)
Best Foreign Play: no award
Best Musical: Dead Outlaw (Itamar Moses, David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna)
Special Citations: The Broadway revivals of Merrily We Roll Along and Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch; Maryann Plunkett and Jay O. Sanders for lifetime achievement; writer-composer Heather Christian
For the second year in a row, the award for Best Play was decided on the first ballot: David Adjmi’s Stereophonic won with 11 of the 21 votes cast.
After a divided first ballot, the Circle opted not to give an award for Best Foreign Play.
No show won a majority on the first ballot for Best Musical, so the Circle moved to a weighted third ballot. Dead Outlaw won with 37 points, followed by Suffs (21 points), Days of Wine and Roses (17 points) and Illinoise (17 points).
The Circle also voted to award three Special Citations: a joint Citation to the Broadway revivals of Merrily We Roll Along and Purlie Victorious; a joint Citation to actors Maryann Plunkett and Jay O. Sanders for lifetime achievement; and to the innovative theatrical composer Heather Christian.
The awards will be presented in a private ceremony on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.
