2021-2022 AWARDS
The New York Drama Critics’ Circle met at Theatre Communications Group on Thursday, May 12, 2022 to determine the winners of its 86th annual awards. The results were as follows:
Best Play: A Case for the Existence of God (Samuel D. Hunter)
Best Musical: Kimberly Akimbo (Jeanine Tesori, David Lindsay-Abaire)
Special Citations: Austin Pendleton; Sanaz Toossi
On the first ballot for Best Play, Samuel D. Hunter’s A Case for the Existence of God won 7 votes, shy of a majority of the 20 voting members. A second vote was then taken to determine whether an award would be given at all. Having agreed that one should, the Circle moved to a weighted third ballot. A Case for the Existence of God won with 30 points, beating out English (18 points), The Minutes (17 points), Prayer for the French Republic (15 points) and On Sugarland (13 points).
The Circle opted not to give an award for Best Foreign Play.
On the question of Best Musical, the Circle chose Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire’s Kimberly Akimbo on the first ballot, with a majority of 11 votes.
The Circle also voted to award two Special Citations: to Austin Pendleton for 60 years of work in the theater; and the Circle’s second Emerging Talent Special Citation to Sanaz Toossi, whose English and Wish You Were Here were both produced this season.
The awards will be presented in a private ceremony at Feinstein’s/54 Below on Friday, May 20, 2022.
