2014-2015 AWARDS

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle met on May 4, 2015, at the offices of Time Out New York magazine, to determine the winners of its 80th annual awards. The results were as follows:

Best Play: Between Riverside and Crazy (Stephen Adly Guirgis). Runner-up: Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3) (Suzan-Lori Parks)
Best Foreign Play: No Award
Best Musical: Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda)
Special Citations: Ars Nova for sustained quality and commitment to the development of new work; Bob Crowley for distinguished achievement in scenic and costume design

The first ballot for Best Play was sharply divided among many candidates, with An Octoroon receiving the most votes (5 out of 22). On the weighted third ballot, Between Riverside and Crazy (25 points) took the lead over a three-way tie among An Octoroon, Father Comes Home from the Wars and The Invisible Hand (19 points). Since none had reached the necessary threshold of 32 points, the Circle moved to a fourth ballot that reduced the field to the top four candidates. Between Riverside and Crazy won this ballot with 38 points (versus 32 for Father Comes Home from the Wars and 28 apiece for the other two finalists).

Having voted the award for Best Play to a work by an American author, the Circle then moved to deciding whether to give an award for Best Foreign Play. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time received 8 votes, but not a majority. On a second ballot, the Circle decided not to give an award in this category.

Hamilton easily won the Best Musical prize on the first ballot, with 17 out of 23 votes cast.

After a discussion of possible candidates, the Circle voted to award two Special Citations: to the theater company Ars Nova, for sustained quality and commitment to the development of new work; and to designer Bob Crowley, for distinguished achievement in scenic and costume design.

The awards will be presented at a private ceremony at 54 Below on May 19, 2015.
