2007-2008 AWARDS

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle met on May 12, 2008, to determine the winners of its annual awards. The results were as follows:

Best Play: August: Osage County, by Tracy Letts
Best Musical: Passing Strange, by Stew and Heidi Rodewald

On the first ballot for Best Play, August: Osage County won ten votes—missing a majority among the Circle’s 22 voting members. A second vote was then taken to determine whether an award would be given at all. Having agreed that one should, the Circle moved to a weighted third ballot, which August: Osage County won handily with 44 points. Conor McPherson ’s The Seafarer placed second (18 points); Tom Stoppard ’s Rock 'n' Roll was third (16 points).

The Circle then moved to the award for Best Foreign Play. After much discussion, it was decided that since half of the Circle's members had not been able to see National Theatre of Scotland's Black Watch, it would be considered next year after its return engagement. On the first ballot, Rock 'n' Roll received nine votes to The Seafarer's eight. Since neither play had won a majority, the vote moved to a second ballot, in which a majority of members voted against giving an award for Best Foreign Play.

Moving to the vote for Best Musical, the members agreed that the Broadway musical In the Heights could not be considered this year, as it was eligible last year in its Off-Broadway run. On the first ballot, Passing Strange won 11 votes—just under a majority—but won on the third ballot, earning 43 points to Adding Machine's 37. The awards will presented at a private ceremony at the Algonquin Hotel on May 19, 2008.
